Bad wiper motor or something else?

Postby rabidmadman » Sun Mar 30, 2014 1:04 pm

So recently, I swapped my wiper blades and my '90 Caprice and everything was fine for a few minutes. All of a sudden, the blades stopped in the closed position and the wiper motor got very loud. The wiper motor gets louder if I switch it to the high setting. Could this be somethign other than the motor? Perhaps a bad relay or something? Currently, it just buzzes loudly nonstop. I've temporarily unplugged it so that it doesn't do this. Has anyone here had a similar issue before? If so, did you wind up swapping the entire motor or was it something simpler?

I have not encountered that specific problem, but my wiper motor won't shut off when it's turned on. I haven't diagnosed it yet, but there's a pretty good diagnosis section on the wiper motor in the GM service manual. I have been meaning to do mine for a while, but since I live in New Mexico where it almost never rains... I've been lazy!

Sounds like the motor's working fine but its shaft is slipping, possibly with worn-off splines.

Check to make sure it's bolted in securely.

You can unbolt it and run it detached to watch the shaft and make sure it spins.

It was definitely bolted in securely. I wound up replacing the whole unit with the one from that 87 parts car that I used to repair all the damage done to my car. Everything works for now..even the washer pump.

However, when I turn on the mist setting, the wipers just stay on forever...not the biggest deal I guess. I would assume that's a problem with the switch on the column..and I"ll just deal with it.

That happens with mine. I think it may be a short somewhere or a bad ground. I'm going to play around with mine and see if I can't fix it, although the lack of rain here provides no motivation. When I get to it, I will take pictures and post what I find out.
