|
I posted some pics on photobucket and some video on youtube of the swap. I did this over the course of 3 days. About the time I replaced the exhaust on my '87 Caprice I developed a rumble and sometimes a banging noise from behind the rear seat. I assumed I screwed up the exhaust and it was hitting something. After a few times under the car finding nothing I figured I'd live with it for a while. Three months later I replaced the rear wheel bearings and found the problem.
I did this swap because I have future plans for the drivetrain and wanted a beefy rear end instead of repairing what I had. As we all learn something new every day, the 12 bolt I picked up from Craigslist was actually an Olds 12 bolt (only 10 bolts on the ring with 12 bolts on the cover). I was kicking myself when I discovered what I did but the more I got into the project, the happier I was that it went the way it did.
Anyway, enjoy...

The rest of the videos are numbered in order from 1 to 14. Just click on my name in the upper right corner and you can view them all from start to finish. I think the way youtube is organized you need to start at the bottom of the list and work your way up to view them in order. _________________ Me hid big dings wid da hamma.

Nice job on the swap.
I have a ford 9" housing that is 52" from end to end that I wanted to use for the longest time, but I am very skeptical of setting up a rear by eye-ball without a jig and welding the brackets in place lol.
I have found a lot of the late-model impala guys have run deap into the 9's on the 8.5 10 bolts, which ended up being my course of choice...but ran almost 1500.00 from start to finish. _________________ Brandon Furches

I had the car aligned a few weeks ago after some other work and the thrust angle was 0.21 degrees. I don't think most cars have a thrust angle that close to zero off the assembly line. The trick is to measure six times. Tack the brackets then measure ten times after that before you do the final welding. When I mocked up the brackets I had the chance to move the axle back 1" to center the tires in the well. A common problem that a lot of aftermarket trailing arm companies correct and build into their products. I also pull a motorcycle trailer so when the rear went I just looked for the biggest strongest rear my wallet could afford. So in went the BOP. Since I have a 4.3 in the car the taller gears woke her right up especially with the trailer out back. _________________ Me hid big dings wid da hamma.

Yea, the 12 bolts are def. Stout as is. My fiances dad has one in his 68 ss 427 4 speed impala and it gets the job done
i plan on leaving on the tranns brake quite often, so this is what i have in my rear:
moser race spool
33 spline gun drilled axles
new tube ends from a ford 9"
richmond 3.73
custom aluminum upper and lower bushings
TA cover and girdle.
...im waiting to get the setup back from the chassis shop so i can get my pig running again. _________________ Brandon Furches
