Yeah better off listening to death. I looked at an 86 2 door and as far as i could tell it had the same ignition/carb setup as my 88. Howeve,r I am not 100%. I know that 85 and under had the coil in the cap and I could have sworn 86-90 had the separate coil. _________________ 1988 Chevy Caprice Classic Owner.

WHEW! Thanks a ton for the info on the ECM. Yeah my 86 has the big fat cap.
Also thanks for the info on what to check. I have noticed lately that when I run it in the early morning and I have the headlights, radio and defroster blower on that the voltage drops off pretty low. I will check connections as some have been found to have corrosion. _________________ 1986 Caprice Classic Brougham |

@death. So in the case of the 86 and under, the advance is controlled by vacuum and not the ECM? _________________ 1988 Chevy Caprice Classic Owner.

Dean, concerning the low voltage problem, I think you'll find that the problem is a slipping belt on the alternator. You won't hear it slipping. Adjusting the belt tension will probably work wonders, but the real fix will probably involve putting a new belt on and keeping it adjusted. This is what I found out with my Olds. _________________ Rob

Thanks for the tip Rob. Yeah I don't hear it slip and I haven't changed it yet. It actually appears to be in decent condition. I will try to tighten it first but will be changing the belts before winter if I do keep her.
I pulled the ECM and checked connections there as well as the PROM. Those were ok. I also pulled the bulkhead connector and it was covered in a tar-like substance. I cleaned up all the connections and re-connected. Took a test drive and the only code I have now is 51. I ordered a new (used) ECM from a recycler and they were going to ship it out today. Hopefully it'll be here Monday and I can get this thing running better. So far this tank I am at just under 3/4 and I have put about 80 miles on it. _________________ 1986 Caprice Classic Brougham |

Yes. It's got a vacuum pot on the side of the distributor. _________________ Me hid big dings wid da hamma.

WoooHooooo! I put the new (used) ECM in and the car is running much better and the TC even locks in. It even feels like it has some power! Only code now is 21 which is TPS. I knew it may be messed up as we broke it putting the carb back together. I'll fill up again in the next 2 weeks and see how the mileage plays out. Just having the TC locking ought to raise it up a bunch. _________________ 1986 Caprice Classic Brougham |
